OCHAPOWACE COVID-19 SECURITY
On March 11, 2020; the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a PANDEMIC resulting from the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan China. On March 18, 2020, the province of Saskatchewan declared COVID19 State of Emergency.
Ochapowace Chief and Council’s response to community safety was to put up barricades at the 5 entrances to the Nation. On March 20, 2020, the Director of Operations and the Admin staff were directed by Leadership to get the barricades ready to go up.
On March 27, 2020, Ochapowace closed it borders to most everyone not living inside the security gates. Security Level 3 went into action. During the next 3 months, a 147 people were employed and tasked with the responsibility of implementing the community’s safety directives ratified at the Leadership table, and on a 24/7 basis COVID Security maintained Leadership’s communiques. During the 1St Wave of Security, Headman Tim Bear was actively involved in providing leadership and assisting the Security Team Leads; Jess Watson, Les George, James George and Gary Leggott. The security gates were taken down June 26/20.
On November 27, 2020, Ochapowace closed their borders a 2nd time. Cindy Watson was instrumental in organizing the Nation’s setup for the closure. Sheldon Watson was brought in as the COVID Security Coordinator; COVID Security Leads were Orval (OJ) Bear, Chris Delorme, Joey Bear, and Patrick Dubois. During the 2nd barricade set-up, Ochapowace employed 122 people. The Ochapowace COVID Security Team was impacted on the line with COVID roughly 15 times, and everyone recovered. The gates were taken down on June 25, 2021.
Ochapowace wishes to acknowledge its citizens and non-residents for coming to help during these unprecedented times. Security Guards will be given a quality vest with an emblem “Ochapowace COVID19 Security”, as a thank you for your service. Please come to pick up your vest at the Justice and Peace Keeper Trailer on Wednesday January 26, 2022 at 1pm – 4pm and Thursday January 27th 9am – 4pm.
Special recognition was given to the oldest person that assisted with COVID-19 Security, Delbert Still Sr.; other special mentions were Colleen Still and Geoff Allary for their uplifting attitude and humor at the gates; other notable mentions was former Headman Tim Bear for his unwavering support to COVID Security Personnel, Sheldon Watson for leading the 2nd COVID-19 border setup; to Betty Watson for assisting with both border set-ups.
